This approach combines accurate in-situ measurements of the concentrations of the gases with the knowledge of how they are transported and mixed into the atmosphere in order to model the underlying fluxes. 'INVERSE MODELLING' is used by CAMS to estimate the net fluxes of CO 2, CH 4 and N 2O. There are a number of ways to estimate the net surface fluxes of greenhouse gases. 'NET FLUX' - the difference between the amount of a gas added to the atmosphere by emissions from various ‘sources’ (such as the combustion of fossil fuels or industrial processes) and the amount taken up by various ‘sinks’ (such as oceans or land biomass), which remove that gas from the atmosphere.ĮSTIMATES OF SURFACE FLUXES OF GREENHOUSE GASES Learn more from our GHG concentration indicator page.

'CONCENTRATION' - the amount of a gas contained in a certain volume of air. WHAT ARE GREENHOUSE GAS CONCENTRATIONS AND NET FLUXES? AND WHAT ARE SOURCES AND SINKS?
